I need to do a few days in the woods on my lonesome.
Id prefer open country to woods and somewhere not to far from the BA.
Trinity Alps perhaps, anyone have any input or suggestions/
Cheers

Mon, February 11, 2008 - 10:49 AMBig Sur / Ventana Wilderness. Lots of very steep terrain, incredible coastal views, oaks, grasslands, redwoods, creeks, waterfalls, etc . .

Henry Coe State Park - lots of open grassland, oak woodlands, but 1/2 of it burned up and you can't go to those parts

Re: Solo Trip
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 1:26 PMI just spent the weekend up north. In the Trinity Alps, anything over about 3500' is burried in several feet of snow, lower elevations on north slopes. Some paved roads are not cleared, and no dirt roads are cleared. But it's great if you are snowshoeing, and you can still find a few clear pockets on south slopes to crash for the night. -

Re: Solo Trip
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 10:27 PMI know a few trails in the Ventana pretty well. There's a great guidebook too: Hiking & Backpacking Big Sur. Plenty of trails to get out for a few days. Here are the ones I know:
Sykes (Pine Ridge trail)
Kirk Creek to Vicente Flat and then onto Cone Peak & back
there's a loop that includes some old native american cave paintings, but I haven't been on that one
and don't overlook the Silver Peak wilderness either, some great spots in there. Check out Salmon Creek Falls next to HWY 1 on your way in/out.
