Yes, read the ones about Big Basin, Up waddle creek from the beach s. of anno nuevo state reserve, sta. cruz county, route 1
it is on a mild uphill abandoned forest road and then another path up a side stream. VERY nice place, redwoods the whole way except for the first 2 km at the bottom.

Re: Waterfall hikes?
Mon, April 10, 2006 - 8:34 AMUvas Canyon is not to be missed (Southern San Jose Gilroy Morgan Hillish area), MANY falls there.
Alamere Falls at Point Reyes is an easy hike and the falls are spectacular.
There's a falls hike on the back side of Mount Diablo that winds around through a bunch of "falls" that are really just lovely little grottos that punctuate two creeks' paths down the mountainside. Lovely but not spectacular. The flowers are probably stellar right about now though...
The hardest hike I've yet done was to Murietta Falls in Livermore. AMAZING falls! Very high and dramatic but easy to miss and hard to get a good view. This is one of the hikes that did my knees in for good (well for now for good). If yo ulike a challenge, the hike is marvelous and the falls are a great climax. But the topography is M-shaped, so by the time you go out and back you have done four grueling ascents and four crushing descents.... Wow. 11 miles I think...
I feel like I'm forgetting something obvious...
Er, Arnold?
Cheers!

Re: Waterfall hikes?
Mon, April 10, 2006 - 4:59 PMHave you been to the Occidental waterfalls? They're not huge, but they're local. Haven't been in a while, and it's a little hard to explain where the trailhead is. It's on a turnout on Bohemian Hwy (east side), between Occidental and Monte Rio. There might even be a couple of cars parked at the turnout, depending on the weather. I bet if you stopped at one of the litte cafes in Occidental, they would be able to give you a more specific description.

sure i have been to those falls. my friend owns the property just above them. i guess i was hoping for more of an aerobic hike. i've been thinking about the pomo trail (undeniably the best hike in So Co, in my book) but i know its a swamp out there right now.

Re: Waterfall hikes?
Fri, April 14, 2006 - 8:44 AMI do this. Start at Muir woods, go up fern canyon all the way to the top of Mt Tam's east peak then over the ridge to the west peak then down with the water to Muir. waterfalls up most of the way and also down. It is aerobic enough for me.

Re: Waterfall hikes?
Thu, July 26, 2007 - 6:36 PMIve been going to the Bohemian Hwy waterfall for 13 years and never had any problem. However, today my 50 year old mother was accosted by a guy who claimed to be the owner of the land. He put my mom and her friend under citizens arrest and claims thay will be cited for trespassing by the sherriff. He was also very menacing, so whiie I agree the falls are beautiful and a treasure to Sonoma County- Hike the trail at your own risk. By the way- Does anyone know who owns that land. Is it really a private owner?

Re: Waterfall hikes?
Fri, April 14, 2006 - 7:32 PMI know it's a jaunt, but I loved Feather falls and Burney Falls. Feather is about 3 hours away in oroville and burney is about 4 hours, just north of lassen near the town of burney. Well worth the trek!

Murietta Falls
Fri, April 14, 2006 - 10:15 PMI've only hiked there once, last summer, and it was just a muddy spot on the ground.
The groundwater had all dried up. This year should be much better with all of the late rain.
Should we plan a May hike date? -

Re: Murietta Falls
Tue, April 18, 2006 - 1:21 PMThere's this place up in Sunol they call Little Yosemite. I went there about five years ago, so I don't remember the details of its location or anything, but I'll look it up and re-post what I find. I remember there being some waterfalls and a river that people were people were swimming. -

Re: Waterfall hikes?
Tue, April 18, 2006 - 1:51 PMI hiked the Donner Creek Creek Falls (Mt. Diablo) last weekend (4/15/06) and the water was flowing nicely. The hike takes you along a creek, past rills, further up a canyon; Nearer the top, two main streamlets converge to feed the creek with many, many rivulets and explorable smaller waterfalls in between. Maple trees, wild flowers, views of the Bay, ahh. As for the mud... not too bad, the soil seams more claylike, so the mud there was didn't cake. Go NOW, while the nearly unprecedented Bay Area rains are still draining. Enjoy!
