Does anyone know of any hiking in the east bay area where you can also go swimming? My son and I go swimming at the local public pool but we would rather go somewhere that does not have chlorine in the water, i.e. rivers, lakes, and ponds. We also like to go hiking so it would be nice to combine the 2 activities.

Wed, June 27, 2007 - 12:51 PMI had my bday party at Lake Anza last year and it was a great time! Kind of a lot of people though, and they mark off swimming areas in the lake.

Wed, June 13, 2007 - 6:43 PMAw I love swimming but natural water is always too cold for me. There was a lake at a trail I went on but I forgot which park it was. sorry

Re: Hiking and swimming?
Wed, June 13, 2007 - 8:54 PMAnd it does get kinda deep -- it's not all knee-deep or whatever. There are a few up-to-the-chest areas, and a small over-the-head area that I know of. -

Re: Hiking and swimming?
Thu, June 14, 2007 - 9:18 PMIf you go up from the swimming hole by the picnic areas a little, you'll find a spot or two with chest deep water or therabouts, and if you go down just a bit from Little Yosemite, there's this marvelous spot, maybe ten feet in diameter, that's over my head (I'm 5'6"), has a highish but small in volume waterfall pouring into it, and a rock near the water that's great for jumping off of. It might not be very safe if your son is particularly young, though. And there's no way you're going to be able to do laps in it, if that's your intent.
Just generally, though, if you're feeling particularly adventurous, hiking up the stream itself from the picnic area is great fun. There are some really awesome spots that there's no way you'd experience if you stuck to the trail. Old shoes are a bit of a neccessity, and a good sturdy stick might come in handy in some areas or help speed you up in others, but with them it's a real marvelous adventure. -

Re: Hiking and swimming?
Tue, June 19, 2007 - 2:51 PMthe sonol parks page says that swimming isn't allowed @little yosemite...is this a different place or is the swimming you're talking about poaching? -
-
Re: Hiking and swimming?
Tue, June 19, 2007 - 3:40 PMIt's technically not permitted, but the park doesn't stop anyone from swimming/wading there, and it is one of the park's most popular spots for playing around in the water. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
