I don't think Pinnacles has backpacking. Skyline to the Sea is 34 miles if you go the whole way and it's a great weekend!

Other places:
Henry Coe is BIG and wild, and it's been hot and dry, so check water sources. You could backpack for a couple of weeks in there!
Butano - nice for an overnight, beautiful and peaceful. There's usually at least a few trickles of water along the trail about 1 mile from the campsite. 5 miles each way, and trails and fire roads go further.
Portola SP / Memorial county park - some campsites and a neat trail network thru there - you'll have to get a map of the trails in south San Mateo County.
Nisene Marks SP (SC county) - beautiful park, but the campsite leaves a lot to be desired, and there's no water near the campsite.

Point Reyes and Big Basin will probably require permits, at Henry Coe and Butano and Nisene Marks you can just waltz on in (after paying)

Further South:
Big Sur's Silver Peak Wilderness didn't burn, but it's pretty far and might be more crowded since the rest of the Big Sur wilderness is closed. There's some good adventures to be had down there!

May I suggest Pt Reyes in the north and Tamales Bay, it is so AWESOME!
To the South you could try Big Basin, lots of trails and waterfalls, take the Skyline Trail to the Sea. a 16Ml jaunt that takes you to Wadell Beach.
Have fun!

I really like Pinnacles National Monument. It's about 2.5 hours south down the 101.

Great hiking, funky rocks, even a cave trail!

Hi there--

Anyone have any suggestions for a great fall weekend backpacking destination near San Francisco??? I'm helping plan a trip for next weekend, and I haven't been backpacking in a million years. Would love somewhere that's somewhat easy to get to, beautiful, and about 10 miles a day, give or take....

THANKS!
