Hi:
Does anybody out there have any good recommendations for a good hike with a 5 year old? My son Daniel and I go hiking often and would welcome any good recommendations for local bay area hikes. He can hike comfortably for about 5 miles. He gets tired on steep climbs yet can do that for about a mile or two.
We are planning a long hike out to the end of Tomales Point at Point Reyes as soon as there is nice weather on a weekend. I think it is about 10 miles round trip without any climbing.
Would that be an ok hike for a small child? I don't want to push him too much.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Hiking with Young Kids
Wed, December 3, 2008 - 11:12 AMA 10-mile hike - even level - is a lot for many adults. I remember as a kid doing an 8-mile hike and I was miserable. Maybe I'm a wimp, but just saying. I'd recommend working up to that level. (I over-challenged my kids on a mountain bike trail - unintentionally - and it was pretty much the last time they mountain biked.)
Here's a useful site for finding hikes of all kinds in the Bay Area: www.bahiker.com/ . There are lots of places where you can find good hikes like you're looking for; some require more of a drive than others. The Peninsula, with which I'm more familiar, is chock full, although some are harder work and a few require you to dodge bicycles. The web site should help you weed those out. Russian Ridge and Long Ridge provide really nice views while wandering along the ridgeline.

Fri, December 5, 2008 - 11:33 AMGo to Rancho San Antonio park in Cupertino. It is right by 280 off of Foot Hill expwy.
The hikes slopes but lots of trees and lots of families hike there. I have hiked with my kids. You choose easier/difficult loops.
