We went camping there last week and it was beautiful - especially after the last ferry left and all the critters came out! Anyway, it really refueled my love of hiking. My goal is to get a bit more conditioned so we can hit one of the sites further from the cove next time - namely I need to build up my endurance while carrying a full pack.
So what are some of your fav "flatter" hikes?

Re: Camping on Angel Island
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 11:11 AMwe were at the uppermost "ridge" site right in front of Alcatraz island - Bay Bridge to the left and Golden Gate Bridge to the the right. Sounds like it may be the same one you're talking about.
Not as nature-y as I like, but did get in a bit of flat pack carrying hiking in over the last couple of weeks - short stints as I'm breaking in a new pair of boots... anyone know of a group hike planned during the next month or so? I don't mind hiking alone, but would prefer a bit of company once and awhile. -

Re: Camping on Angel Island
Sun, August 3, 2008 - 4:12 PMIt's safe as far as no dangerous animals and very few people after the last ferry goes back at 4pm, but the only time we saw a ranger was when he was picking up trash and checking permits at about 9 am. What we really weren't prepared for was that the one little cafe/gift shop on the island closes in time for the employees to go home on the 4 o'clock ferry! It's "charcoal fires only" but they don't sell charcoal on the island, or ice, or a long list of other things you might find at a camp store or even a 7-11 for that matter. There was potable water at the campsite and an outhouse about 30 or 40 yards from our campsite. I think it would depend on how old (and hearty) your kids are because you literally have to pack everything in and I think it was between 1.5 and 2 miles one way based on the signs we passed. I think I just googled "Angel Island" for the basics.
