If ya ran across my similar post in great outdoors, yep it's me again

So when you go on an all day hike, what's in your pack? I'm taking my kids on their first long hike during our next camping trip (we've done short ones w/o packs or just food/water/first aid kit) and they are old enough to carry their own packs... just trying to get an idea of what other peoples standard gear is so I can see how it matches up with what I'm thinkin'.

    Since I don't have kids, there's a lot you'll have to think about that I don't, but a few items you might consider:

    * Water, water, water
    * Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen
    * Insect repellent, depending on territory. I have combined sunscreen-insect repellent for my backpacking trips.
    * Bandanna and baseball cap; maybe sunglasses.
    * Bandages, tweezers. Adult should have a good Swiss Army knife or multitool. Spare shoelaces?
    * Small, very absorbent towel.
    * Wet wipes. The 15-or-so travel packs are an incredible recent addition to my pack. Excellent for wiping dust off at camp; probably even more important with sticky and messy kids.
    * Spare socks if hiking any substantial distance.
    * Emergency whistle around each neck.
    * Emergency windbreaker or shell (regardless of the day's heat)
    * A compass and topo map to teach them basic navigation/orienteering.

      thanks, Richard - that's pretty much along the lines of what I was thinkin' .... I haven't picked up whistles yet, but it's on my list of things to get before our next trip anyway. Extra socks is a good idea too ;-)
