Okay, I'm actually going to have time to go hiking starting in a couple of weeks, and we'll have guests who I'm not sure are up to ENORMOUS hills (although some are okay), but like to walk really long distances--any ideas for Bay Area stuff?

Re: Long, beautiful hike recommendations anyone?
Sun, November 25, 2007 - 4:37 PMThere are all sorts of great trails just across from the GGBridge, either amongst the hills of Mt. Tam, or along the shoreline in Pt. Reyes. Those are two of my favorite hikes :)

Could I suggest the beach side of Big Basin park going up to the water fall in the redwoods
the entrance is just south of Anno Nuevo State Beach at Waddel Creek.

Re: Long, beautiful hike recommendations anyone?
Mon, November 26, 2007 - 10:36 AMYou should probably define "really long."
I really love hiking all over Redwood Regional Park, traipsing in and out of the valley with the stream trail at the bottom...there are gorgeous ferny thickets and cool woods, especially at the North end, and between the stream trail at the bottom, The French Trail along the West hillside, the East and West Ridge trails along the top of either ridge, and the myriad quiet little trails (some quite steep) between the preceding, I can always improvise a lovely hike anywhere from three to fourteen miles depending on the time I have available. It is so wonderful to be able to get really into quiet woods SO close to the megalopolis! It's just a few minutes from 580 up Redwood Road (I believe its the 35th Avenue exit, just head east and turn left on skyline (you can enter from Redwood Road but if you park on skyline (see map) either at the West or North Tip of the park, it's free!

Mon, November 26, 2007 - 5:26 PMOkay--"really long"...how about anywhere from fourteen to twenty miles--day length, but all-day length. Those sound lovely... -

Re: Long, beautiful hike recommendations anyone?
Tue, November 27, 2007 - 12:56 AMDrive up Sir Francis Drake past Samuel P Taylor park to the bike crossing just north of the park in the Golden Gate Rec Area.
Then there is a mellow hike back up through the redwood park and then crossing the road up to the dam. About 7 or 8 Miles up so somewhere over 14 total. Very nice groves near where the foot bridge crosses the stream and road. -

Fri, November 30, 2007 - 10:22 PMTom, your Blog is a thing of Beauty! I did the 14 mile Mitchell Canyon Diablo loop three times this year. Kinda done with it until Spring, I do believe (last time I did it Clockwise for the first time and it seemed SOooo much harder...)
I'm coming Arnold! Where's Dogtown? -

Re: Long, beautiful hike recommendations anyone?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 10:44 PMOh and hey everyone! In case you, like me, have done a lot of Bay Area Hiking and are keen on the inside scoop on something new, Tom's link up there led me to his column... which I'm a little startled I've never seen before
www.mercurynews.com/tommangan/
And it's pretty great, with Easy, Medium and Tough hikes suggested in each of all kinds of nifty spots he uncovers for us.
Thanks Tom! -

Re: Long, beautiful hike recommendations anyone?
Fri, November 30, 2007 - 11:25 PMThanks for the kind words, Howard.
One of the SaveDiablo.org leaders e-mailed me today and noted that Diabo has 155 miles of trails. He has an annual outing where he car camps and does nothing but hike the trails for four days. (and if he puts in 25 miles a day he's still got another 55 to go!).
Any time between now and next April is a good time to do Diablo ... ideally a few days after a good storm. It'll be muddy on the main roads but the single tracks are usually pretty navigable.

Re: Long, beautiful hike recommendations anyone?
Tue, December 4, 2007 - 10:48 AMBig Basin to the Sea trail is long and covers many different types of growth as it goes from the redwoods all the way down to Waddell beach. It's been a good idea to have two cars, one parked at the beach, one parked at the head of the trail. -
